FINE SOLOMON ISLANDS PALM WOOD BOW

19th century. 82 å?‰۝ length of red/brown hardwood with flat face and rounded back. The face pigmented black and a single black line centered on the back. Pre-contact, made without metal tools. The surfaces with linear scraped texture having been shaped with shells. On islands in the Pacific, the hardest materials available were sea shells, coral and rat teeth. All were used as tools to shape and finish wood in an extremely tedious and labor intensive process. Metal tools were not available before the mid-19th century.
