FINE SOLOMON ISLANDS PALM WOOD BOW

$675.00

19th century. 81” length of rich dark red/brown hardwood. Slightly concave face and rounded back. One end with woven split cane string retainer. Pre-contact, made without metal tools. The surfaces with linear scraped textures have been shaped with shells. On islands in the Pacific, the hardest materials available were sea shells, coral and rat teeth. All were used as tools to shape and finish wood in an extremely tedious and labor-intensive process. Metal tools were not available before the mid-19th century.
