RARE VARIATION VIKING WEDDING RING, SIZE 10 ½

Gilt bronze, size 10 ½ 6.0mm width. The inside with double punched/chiseled bands. That form of decoration is well known and this example has been cut, turned inside out and rejoined. Vikings were able to resize rings and examples so altered are frequently found.  That the process would be used to turn a ring inside out is unique to us here. Most likely, it is part of a funerary process and the ring was not worn in this state. Alternatively, the decoration may have had spiritual significance which required secreting it when worn. As our knowledge of Viking culture and religion grows, the answer may be waiting. Professionally refurbished for modern wear with the 24karat gold overlay restored.
