WWI FIELD MADE TRENCH KNIFE

$125.00

Trench warfare brought unanticipated situations. When overrun, hand to hand combat resulted. Swords were no longer issued to infantry and rifles were too clumsy for the confined spaces. Private purchase hunting knives were the most common solution, but an almost endless array of clubs and knives were made in the field to meet the need. This knife is made of steel bar, probably part of a fence, forged to a leaf shaped blade with a handle formed from a doubled spiral twist stock. The urgency of the need is reflected in the hastily formed grip.
