Whaling, 19th Century Sail Maker's Seam Rubber

Two piece wood comprising a short handle and long mallet head with a grover to the top. Used in pairs. The seam is seated in the groove and formed by tapping with the other mallet. The result is a flatter seam and flexing of the stitching to a more uniform, thus stronger seam. 7" width. Entirely handmade and well used with the mallet ends worn.
