27 ½” double-edged blade of fighting form. The ricasso marked C A HART & CO PHILADELPHIA. That maker is identified by one source as active 1870-88 producing swords for militias and secret societies. This example is made to the standard militia NCO specifications and likely was the sword of a state militia Non-Commissioned Officer. Plated hilt with excellent reeded bone grip and pommel surmounted by an eagle. Original plated scabbard with no dents and the plating is complete and bright. NCO’s purchased their own swords from sword dealers and owned them after retirement. They chose from the various type available were allowed, so long as they met the basic specifications of the pattern.
