Used so extensively that it was recovered in hand stitched leather and even, wore the shaft through after that! 9” length. Commercially produced with lead weight terminal, and flexible shaft. Used by saloon keepers and criminals, particularly in waterfront areas. The surface renewed in its working life in black leather. The only places where corporal punishment was used to that extent were prisons and on shipboard. Corporal punishment including caning and flogging was used in the British Navy until 1879. An instrument for beating men, so used that it needed to be refurbished!
