VIKING PROTECTIVE BROOCH PENDANT NECKLACE, 10th CENTURY

$125.00
10th Century. Circular bronze, about 1 3/8" diameter, exceptionally large for these. Circular section and slightly irregular from hand forming or perhaps the result of the battle. The surface textured from burial. Professionally conserved and the pure silver surface restored. On a modern black leather neck cord with gilt chain closure, gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity. Worn in numbers on the surface of the jerkin, these small metal brooches provided a measure of protection against sword cuts and, in fact, were a form of armor. See current Public Television programming for documentation of these in action. As protectors, they also held spiritual significance for the warrior. Most are plain distinguishing this one for its modeled form. Delicate form and proportions. Gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
