VIKING BEAD, C.850-1050 AD

Cobalt blue glass, mandrel wound. 15.1mm length, over ½”. made with the glass wound over a rod coated with a parting material and paddle-shaped to faceted form while cooling. Cobalt blue was used in China during the Viking period and this bead was likely made in China and imported into Europe through the “Silk Road” trading network. Vikings traded, looted, and extorted beads which account for finding this bead among Viking artifacts in Europe.
