STANLEY POOL FORGED IRON TRADE SPEAR

$165.00

19th century. A very rare small example of the traditional spears, which are about 5 1/2" in length. This example is identical in form, construction and decoration, but just 13 1/2" in total length. Such spears were used to purchase slaves, exchanged for brides and forfeited as criminal penalties. Their use was primarily before the colonial period dating them to before about 1870. This is the only example of this size known to us and surely was made for a specific purpose, possibly an highly important event such as the death of a royal heir.
