SPANISH LANGE DE BOEUF C.1475

$4,400.00

The lange de boeuf or ox tongue is a large bladed predecessor to the partisan. This is a good quality example dating to the late Gothic period. It served in Andalusia, in the final reconquest which drove out the Moors. The blade is triangular with a pair of clefts forged into the base. It is 75” long on tarred cloth covered haft with iron and brass studs full length. The haft is warped as shown with a crack to the butt. The surface is dry and congealed throughout. This weapon would have armed an infantryman in the expectation that he would be able to overcome a mounted Moor.
