SCOTTISH MAN’S RING C.1300-1500, SIZE 10 ¼

$225.00

Gilt bronze size 10 1/4 with 3.0mm rounded face band. flaring to the shoulders.  Thick raised bezel, lenticular with medial lugs. The top with a saltire (St. Andrew’s cross) with dot and circles in the quarters, on hatched ground. The symbolism is indicative of a blend of historic cultural symbols. St Andrew evolved as the patron saint of Scotland after his bones were taken to Scotland in the 4th century. Before the Battle against the Angles, about 832AD King Oengus II prayed to Andrew, saw a saltire shaped cloud, and went on to win the battle, solidifying Andrew as Scotland’s patron. The dot and circle are common to Saxon rings though not exclusive or iconic. The blend of these symbols suggests a Scottish origin of the High Gothic period. Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold surface restored. Gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
