For Naval and merchant sailing ships about mid-19th century. Oak, 10 1/4" length. Wood handle with a V grooved head which nests the newly sewn seam for shaping with a mallet. Uniformity of seam shape contributed to the strength of the sail by reducing stress concentrations.
