Somerset House on the Thames in London, near Waterloo bridge was the town house for the Duke of Somerset. This engraving depicts a Royal Ball at Somerset house copied from an original painting by William Hogarth. All Hogarth’s engravings were made copying his original paintings in mirror image for convenience and accuracy. This engraving was made by Cook, from the Hogarth original, after Hogarth’s death. See Metropolitan Museum of Art, #1974.506.1 for another example. 21” x 17 ¼” image double matter to 24” x27” for framing.
