ROMAN WHEEL OF FORTUNE AMULET NECKLACE, 3ND-6TH CENTURY AD

$245.00

Wheel form just over 1" diameter (1.02”). Silvered bronze, modeled in high relief as a ten-spoke wheel. Each spoke terminal with a raised floral terminal. Each with a small stem implies fertility.  Raised conical hub with beaded surround. The concept of the Rota Fortunae, the Wheel of Fortune, dates back millennia with the Roman goddess Fortuna capriciously deciding the fate of men with a spin of her wheel, often sweeping them up to unprecedented new wealth and prosperity. It has proven to be an enduring symbol and concept even through the Christianization of Rome and into the Middle Ages as evidenced by the highly influential works of the late Roman philosopher and statesman Boethius. A fine ancient piece deeply imbued with historical meaning. Excellent preservation, with the silver surface restored, on an 18” sterling silver neck chain for contemporary wear. Jewelry gift boxed with a certification of authenticity.
