ROMAN PROSTITUTE’S RING C.100-400 AD, SIZE 2 ½

$265.00

Gilt bronze, about size 2 ½ of peaked oval form. Ridge band, 2.4 mm width with crisply defined base lug associated with the usual Roman rounded nub or thickened bottom. The shoulders with raised lugs are identified as Guiraud type 3, sub d. See Ancient Rings, Pollio, p.62. Oval bezel with a raised sphere on the column centered, superficially imitating a gemstone and blatantly advertising the intentions of the wearer. Roman prostitutes were typically adolescents, largely slaves. Prostitution was practiced openly with brothels sometimes sharing doors with libraries. Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold surface restored. Jewelry gift boxed with certificate of authenticity. A Roman ring of classic fashion form, executed in exaggerated detail for the prostitution market.
