RARE VIKING FUNERARY AMULET, 800-1050AD

$285.00

A lunar amulet of the form frequently encountered in pendant form. This example is made of soft metal (lead? Tin?) with no provision for suspension. As well, it is crisply preserved indicating that once made, it was not handled after a single use. Just under 1” (0.98”) height of crescent form with central triple dot motif to the field and double ball terminals representing Sol the sun and Mani the moon. The top with a projection, perhaps for tying to the corpse. Vikings were expert navigators, and dependent on navigation for ocean travel.  The constellations signified mystery and power to Vikings. Lunar pendants were worn as pectorals as well as suspended from belts, other clothing and horse harnesses. This amulet is intended to invoke divine guidance in the afterlife.
