A form well known but about which there is no broad consensus among experts. The dominant opinion is that they were made to kill horses that could withstand most arrow wounds and remain in service. The likelihood of hitting an artery, a disabling wound, is increased with this broad cutting edge. Mongols under Temujin (Ghengis Khan) conquered Eastern Europe including present-day Poland, on horseback. They knew that the loss of a horse reduced a cavalryman to vulnerable prey. As well, the horse was a much larger target, fully supporting the function of these specialist arrows.
