RARE MEDIEVAL CHISEL POINT ARROWHEAD

$140.00

Among the oddities encountered in ancient archery are examples of this type, rare but found in numerous cultures. Speculation on their function varies from the plausible to the bizarre. The question is, where would a lineal impact interface be more beneficial than a point. Our suggestion is that they were used for contests or demonstrations of skill using ceramic targets such as tera cotta jars or purpose made figures. The chisel edge would impart a fracture plane as well as have better purchase, whereas a point could be prone to glancing off without effect. As well, the chisel would survive for reuse whereas the point would deflect. This example is 3 ¼” length, forged iron with broad spread base for a thick shaft, and tapered tang it is surface rusted but appears not excavated, consistent with our suggestion.
