New Hebrides War Club

18-early 19 century, evidently pre contact. 42" length, hardwood, of slender tapered form with swelled butt and flared terminal. Circular section, finely crafted with no evidence of metal tool construction. The surface showing scraped texture as produced by working with shells, coral and rat's teeth. Exceptional surface with fine deep patina and wonderful graining texture. Single small blade nick to the grip, obviously later in its life and perhaps defensive.
