NEW HEBRIDES WAR CLUB

$365.00
19th century example of classic form.  32 ½” length with cylindrical grip on tapered haft. The terminal from a root cluster with domed top and three tooth form lugs shaped from spreading roots. The fourth quadrant with a shallow lip now worn. Ample evidence of scraped shaping and perhaps made without the benefit of metal tools. The discovery of sandalwood in 1825 led to European intrusion and the import of Polynesian workers, followed three decades by a depopulation to provide workers for plantations on Fiji, Samoa and Australia. Remote islands retained their cultures including use of the club for war and settlement of disputes.
