NEOLITHIC TERRA COTTA VINCA FIGURE C.5400-4500 BC

The Vinča culture, flourishing in Southeastern Europe (primarily modern-day Serbia, Kosovo, and parts of Romania, Bulgaria, and Hungary) between 5400 and 4500 BC, is one of the most significant Neolithic societies in Europe. It is renowned for its advanced settlements, early metallurgy, and distinctive artifacts, particularly its terracotta figurines. This figure, 3 ¾” height, is a fine example of the female type considered to be a “Mother God” embodying fertility and protection. The face is typical of that group. The detail of the clothing is exceptional and scarce, but consistent with others in the group. It is in excellent preservation indicating ritual burial.
