19th century secret society sword. Originating in 1883, the primary function of the Woodmen was providing death benefits for its members. As with other secret societies, it had a flamboyant culture which served to unify the members and attract recruits. The most visible were its drill teams which performed throughout the Midwest to great acclaim. This sword is based on the 1860 staff and field pattern with the Woodmen logo replacing the eagle on the guard. The back guard folds. The 30” straight d.e. blade is heavily plated, nearly completely intact with just some minor flaking along the edge near the point.
