MASSIVE EUROPEAN EXECUTIONER’S AXE C.16TH CENTURY

$3,450.00

Probably English and according in detail with the heading axe from the Tower of London. While that famous example is frequently referred to as “massive”, this example is about 10% larger overall. The tapered bit which is struck with three cross and orb armorer’s marks on each side, is 18” deep and the overall length is 51 ½". The weight is 9 lbs. 14oz. As described for the Tower example, the size and proportionate stature of the executioner necessary to use it served as a display of power for the crown. While the cross and orb were used in the decoration of weapons of the period, its dual significance here cannot be ignored. Records indicate that the Tower example is one of five inventoried there. The others have gone missing over the centuries. This example may be at least related as the form is distinctively different from Continental examples.
