MAASAI BEADED FLY WHISK

$375.00

Early 20th century. 24 length. Made from white cow tail hair. Socket of characteristic Maasai red leather as found on sword scabbards. Cylindrical grip with bulbous terminal. The socket overlaid each side with a beaded panel of abutting contrasting color triangles, probably a clan sign. The grip wrapped with beads in zigzag patterns. The terminal encased in contrasting bead work panels. The fly whisk has a utilitarian value, however, examples of this quality were symbols of rank, much like a scepter, and reserved for the highest ranking officials. The pure white tail hair is rare and considered sacred, representing the original gift of all cattle to Maasai. Complete, with minor storage soiling only.
