 Unique form X shaped ebony hilt cut to incorporate the heartwood/sapwood color contrast. 7 1/2" medially ridged J form hammer finished blade made to hook and tear on the upstroke and slash on the backstroke, thus maximizing damage based on the arc of the human arm swing. Well-tooled leather scabbard. Dating to the Mahdist War of 1885 and excellent for its age. The Hadendoa, known to British soldiers as "Fuzzy Wuzzies", were fierce and respected warriors, singularly successful against the British. Exceptional preservation.
