India, 320-550 AD. Red terracotta. Height 5 3/4" plus the base. The torso of a male deity with protruding belly and wreath form necklace. Fragmentary, evidently deliberately desecrated. Fine character. On walnut pedestal mount. The Gupta dynasty dominated the northern sub continent for over two hundred years known as the Golden Period, when art flourished, one result of which is this sculpture.
