FRENCH SMALLSWORD, C1790-1800

$675.00
This is an interesting example of a type of sword which became popular before and during the French Revolution. It has a brass hilt of form typical for the period but executed in a more perfunctory manner as a rebuke to the noble class who wore swords of jewelry quality. The double-shell guards are symmetrical with particularly high relief foliage decoration to the inside. Knuckle bow and pommel matching. Wire wrapped grip. Traces of gold to the hilt elements.  The 32 1/8” double-edged flattened diamond section blade was probably made before the social upheaval and used here from the maker’s stock. The forte well decorated in foliage and good quality. A sword for a common man when every city dweller need to be armed, and his political position declared.
