Late Roman/Byzantine, 4-th-6th century AD.  Gilt bronze, just under 5/8” (0.59”) diameter raised crenulated edge and six radial spokes flanking low domed circles. The Rota Fortunae belongs to the goddess Fortuna who spins it randomly causing the fates of people to be altered dramatically, some with great benefit and others with tragedy. The image was used in jewelry and art to bring good fortune. In the early Christian period as here, it was modified to conform to the new ideology while retaining its fundamental form. The back with an engraved tear form figure of further mystical significance. Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold surface restored on an 18” gilt sterling silver neck chain. Gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity. Particularly finely made and preserved.
