Fine Papua New Guinea Sago Stirrer


Precontact, 22 1/8" length. Blackwood of paddle form with the top finely carved as an anthropomorphic crocodile head above a band of characteristic curvilinear figures. The surface finished with shells producing the scraped surface identifying precontact work. The figural terminal well executed with traces of lime inlay and minute white paint spatter from later display. Surface encrustation as typical for these early examples.
