EUROPEAN TRANSITIONAL RAPIER C.1690-1710

$2,800.00

This fine sword represents the link between the swept hilt rapier and the smallsword. Its most distinguishing feature is the fully developed cross guard which later, evolved into a single forward quillon. As well, the thickened edge shell guards with very fine lattice pierced plates, are of equal size whereas in smallswords, they are always asymmetrical with the right larger. The 32 3/8” blade is oval at the forte, decorated with military motif, indicating that this was the sword of a military officer. The balance of the blade is of flattened diamond section with scrolling foliage at the transition. A historic sword in exceptional condition for the period.
