See Swords and Blades of the American Revolution, Neumann, #226 for a very similar example, comparing in particular for the inverted pear shaped pommel. Gilt hilt with opposing peaked circular dished guard, straight cross guard, swelled grip and inverted pear shaped pommel, all hand engraved with large rococo embellishments. 28 5/8” rapier blade with central fuller to the forte marked INAMI VARIA (?), probably an abbreviated religious motto. Neumann points out that these are true rapiers with fighting hilts, carried by military officers in civilian situations. They were carried in Colonial America and many pressed into service in the French and Indian War as well as the Revolution.
