European or American Snuff Box


Lacquered papier mache, late 18-early 19th century, Revolutionary War/Napoleonic/War of 1812 period. 3 1/2" length, rounded rectangular form with piano hinged top decorated in faux tortoise shell motif. Excellent with minor age blemishes only. Snuff use originated in the Americas. By this time, it was largely used by "dipping" which involved placing the dry snuff powder inside the cheek.
