12th century, period of the first three crusades. Forged iron, slightly over 2‰۝ length with elongated pyramidal point and opened seam conical socket. Sized to overcome the light protection of the of the Saracens. The Church Council declared the crossbow unfit for Christian use in 1139, except against infidels. The crossbow played an important role in the crusades, giving the Christians a distinct advantage of power as well as range.
