EASTERN EUROPEAN SHEPHERD’S AXE FOKOS, 19th CENTURY

$475.00

Poland, Hungary or Slovakia. The 19th-century descendant of the traditional Polish czekan of the 16th-17th century. 34 ¾” length. Iron axe head inset engraved with geometry and stylized foliage on both sides. The edge with an engraved copper covering probably indicates that the axe was “neutralized” and used for ceremonial purposes. Scorch patterned wood haft with brass spine set with rings, 7 of 12 remaining. Charming hand work and aging. These were carried by shepherds for protection against wolves and human attackers.
