Iconic example from that well known group. Of large proportions with iron hit comprising double ring guards delicately pierced inset plates. The left side with a thumb ring. The quillon with flower mark to the left side. Fine iron wire wrapped grip. 37” double edged blade inscribed SAHAGOM, referencing the Spanish smith, Alanzo de Aahagom, for quality by association, and chiseled running wolf mark. The root of the blade with a maker’s mark, crowned XXX and the Amsterdam City mark opposite. Rembrandt’s most famous work, The Night Watch, depicts the guard unit at one of Amsterdam’s guard stations. It was painted in 1642, precisely contemporary with this sword. About as fine an example of these much cherished weapons as can be found.
