Continental European One Liter Measure

Probably Naval, Dutch. Iron, cylindrical 4 1/2" diameter with hook shaped handle. The thickened lip stamped at the front with two marks, a" 5 "and cursive "g". Brass front plate marked "1 LITER ""H". Our research produced a similar vessel in brass marked with the same cursive font, engraved with an anchor and ship's name. It is identified as a Dutch Naval rum or gin measure C.1790, unique to that seller and priced at 495.00. Ours accords in detail and may share that attribution. The period of 1780-92 was turbulent for the Dutch Navy and maritime fleet. Defeated by the British, they were forced to allow free passage in the East Indies. The Napoleonic Wars resulted in the assimilation of the Dutch, (then recognized as the Batavian) Navy into the French Navy. The liter was introduced to France in 1795 as part of Napoleon's redefining the calendar and measuring system. Thus, this measure may be considered Napoleonic as well.
