CONGOLESE SLAVER’S SPEAR C.1880

$170.00
From the Baptist Missionary Society collection, which was circulated through churches on “Mission Sunday” to raise funds for the missions. The practice was discontinued in the 1930’s and the collection sold about 1980. Classic form with leaf shaped iron point and a portion of its original haft. Cut to 32 ½” overall to allow transport in a tea chest which was a standard shipping container at the time, much like modular container shipping today. At the time and later, slavery to provide for the South American and Arab markets was very actively practiced. The missionaries converted some slavers to Christianity which included giving up the slave trade.
