Congolese Fetish Figure


Second half of the 19th century, the period of intense slaving in the area. Kuba, central Congo. Carved wood, 9" length. Elongated body and short legs. Pointed head of typical Kuba interpretation, the eyes and ears set with seeds. The body with a fetish cavity and wrapped with pitch covered fabric including delicate cross weave around the legs. Sound and complete. Characteristic encrustation to the surface, probably the results of congealed fetish materials applied over decades. Used as a vehicle to communicate with the spirits.
