Revolutionary War period or before. 2 1/8” length of black japanned papier-mâché. The lid inlaid with a pewter border and central escutcheon. Fine patina and character with remnants of tobacco within. These were used to carry snuff or pipe tobacco interchangeably. Pewter foil inlay on a black japanned body is the most common construction and takes many forms. See Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution, Neumann, page 245 & 246 for examples.
