Blacksmith-made, forged iron, 2 1/2” width of C form with three integral spikes which were driven into the heel of the wearer's boot to allow grip on ice. See Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution, Neumann, p.162, where he points out that in the Winter, travel through the wilderness utilized frozen waterways whenever possible. Rare.
