This example was produced by C ROBY, W CHELMSFORD MA, and so marked on the ricasso. Reverse with U S FSS (Fredrick S Strong, inspector 1862-3) 1863.  The inspector’s initials repeated on the knuckle bow. The 32” blade otherwise unmarked.  Standard 1840 pattern as carried by Union Sergeants before and during the Civil War. This example issued in 1863 as indicated.
