1840 pattern (The American Sword, Peterson #32) by German maker Clement & Jung with the C & J mark to the ricasso of the 36 ½” blade (a few small nicks). Brass hilt of standard pattern. Wire wrapped leather covered grip. The US government and state militias, which made up more than half the armed forces at the start of the war, purchased swords of this pattern from German makers. The Confederacy also purchased them from the same makers. This sword could, equally, have served either side.
