13 1/4" length. Mid-19th century or earlier as used primarily on the West coast and specifically identified with San Francisco and the Gold Rush of 1849. One piece wood body with expanded base to engage the palm of the hand. The flat bottom with three character and oval cartouche ciphers. Iron hook secured with a iron band and riveted through at the end of the inset spine. Metal shows rust. Wood sound with light encrustation.
