Late 18th-early 19th century, period of the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars. Cylindrical, 3 1/4” diameter with flared edges for better purchase. Black papier mache with a hand portrait of a woman on the top, done in he Old Master style of the 14th-15th century. The portrait surface slightly congealed (evidently varnished as were oil paintings) but complete and undamaged. The lip of the bottom chipped but not showing when closed.
