CELTIC POUCH KNIFE C.200BC-400AD

$425.00

Forged iron, 5 ¼” (5.26”) total length. Down curved blade of characteristic form. Integral tang which would have been wrapped in leather or hide to provide a grip. The terminal formed as a heart. A rare variation of the ring pommel knife, this example varies in both theme and construction. The heart is formed by dividing the tang in the forging process whereas ring pommels are made by forging a single extension which is looped and forged. The heart as a symbol was not used in Celtic art or culture and so, in this case, is merely a whimsey of the smith which remains charming today.
