19th century. 11 1/2” diameter, with scalloped edge and domed body with 7 bosses, each with eight point star base. Decorated throughout with stylized foliage in various arrangements. A few minor casting flaws and good patina. Reverse with plant fiber hand grip. The Batak were notorious for cannibalism which was practiced through the 19th century. Accounts are numerous and vary. The ears, nose, soles of the feet and palms of the hands are the most auspicious for human consumption. Some experts claim that parents were consumed when they could no longer work or maintain themselves.
