10 1/8” length, wood accurately carved with bottle nose, ridged sides and horizontal flukes. Carved details, include the back panel depicting a fish on basket weave ground perhaps indicating that the dolphin had consumed it in an epic tale. Additional decorative spatter. The techniques and paint pigments are exactly as used on the bark paintings of the early 20th century. The side with a small screw eye, most likely indicating it was attached to a string and used in the presentation of orally preserved epic tales. See also our A8690 for a related figure.
