ANCIENT PAGAN SOLAR AMULET, C.400-100 BC, CELTIC OR ROMAN

A solar disk in worship of Sol, the sun god. That practice and the gods name were carried forward to Viking paganism as well. 14.2mm diameter, about 5/8” slightly domed both sides. The front engraved with a faint cross with pairs of punched at the beam terminals, done by a convert to Christianity, probably in the period of persecution 64-303 AD. This, this was an outward concession to Roman Pagan religion while clandestinely proclaiming the owner as a Christian. In some circumstances, wearing it could lead to the death of the wearer. Professionally refurbished with the silver surface restored and suspended from a Sterling silver neck chain. Jewelry gift boxed with certificate of authenticity. Excellent preservation and detail.
