AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR SPONTOON HEAD C.1775

$675.00

Forged iron, 22 ½” length. Leaf shaped point with broad medial fuller and conically tipped cross guard. 2# 10℥ weight with a solid ball, over 2 1/8” above the conical socket with cheek straps.  That feature suggests that the haft was mid length to allow its use as a bludgeon as well, which is consistent with fighting without armor.  See Swords and Blades of the American Revolution, Neumann, #69.PA and #73.PA for related examples lacking this feature. A Connecticut find, purchased: Norman Flayderman, 1965. Uniform stable brown rusting overall with a portion of the original wood haft in the socket.
